 What is Summer Brain Drain?

 Key Facts:
  • Brain drain, summer learning loss, summer slide, or summer holiday ‘unlearning’ refers to students’ loss of skills and knowledge during the summer weeks when school is out.
  • Students lose an average of one month of school learning over summer vacation/holiday, with some students losing up to three months of learning.
  • Summer learning loss is greatest in math computation, reading and spelling.
  • Teachers of all grade levels often need to spend the first several weeks of each school year reteaching what students learned the year before.
  • Reasons for summer learning loss include limited access to books and the absence of positive reading experiences.
Things We Can Do to Help:
  • Children read at least 6 books. According to studies, reading 6 books or more over the summer can help children retain learning from the preceding year.
  • Build your home library. Have a diverse selection of books on hand from which your children can choose — children are more engaged when they select the books they read!
  • Add concept books to the mix. Include books that reinforce basic learning concepts, especially math.
  • Bring the books to life. “Unpack” the books through discussion and activities.  If you would like to host a Barefoot Books party to help with this please let me know

Summer Reading Barefoot Style

I didn't mean to take such a long vacation from my blog.  Many posts are in my head, but never found their way to posting.  To start fresh and celebrate Summer, let's promote Summer Reading.  Barefoot Books is partnering with PBS and Jet Blue to Soar With Reading this Summer!  Click below and you can view the Barefoot Books Summer Reading list. and find activities for your favorite Barefoot Books.  Make sure you post your favorite children's book and for every post Barefoot Books is donating a book to a child in need.     In the coming weeks I will be highlighting some of my favorites from the list.  Please go to http://marshamiles.barefootbooks.com if you wish to buy any of these amazing titles and Soar into Summer with a Barefoot Book.  Now you can grow wings while going Barefoot!
